NIGERIA'S INDEPENDENCE, HOW FAR HAVE WE GONE...

How far have we really gone as a nation at 56? Have we actually achieved what a 56 years old ought to achieve? Well, every Nigerian might have his opinion on the growth rate and socio-economic progress of Nigeria. Overtime, Nigeria has been rated as the giants of
Africa but in recent times, the 180 million populated Nation lost its economic pride to other
African countries, Republic of South Africa in particular. As others will say, Nigeria has become a crawling giant.
A question for the day: is this the NIGERIA that our founding fathers, our past heroes yearn to see after 56years? A Nigeria that has derailed from its major economic mainstay which was agriculture, or a Nigeria that the poverty rate will continue to rise persistently. Or a Nigeria that will be soiled with gross corruption and massive impunity? No!
Well, IBBUL Campus Gist took out time to hear from some students on their perspective of 56 year old Nigeria and we were glad with their response.
Umar Mahmud, a 400L students of Geography, on the independence speech of President Muhammadu Buhari, he has this to say: "One thing is for sure, the speech is assuring, the promises if given the chance and time i believe it will turn to reality"
Will Nigerians actually give the president the desired chance? This is quite a big question. Mahmud however spoke further saying that PMB has a good intention towards Nigerians as was seen before when he ruled in the 80s. But on the issue of the economy, he opined that the President should listen to cry of the majority.
Comrade Alhassan Gaddafi 400L student of Physics also took out time to share his perspective on 56 years old Nigeria with us. He categorically said that Nigeria is not celebrating its independence day today but rather, liberation day. This is because after the effort put in place by our nationalists, the likes of Awolowo, Balewa, Azikiwe, Enahoro etc, to gain independence, today "we struggle against fetid social conditions and diseases we struggle against ignorance and mental slavery. We struggle for the most basic of all basic human needs. And so, one cannot but believe that the goal and the labor of our nationalists have been wasted". He then concluded by saying "Let's not seek to fix the blame of the past but let's accept our own responsibility of the future"
Also, Muhammad from Political Science said for any nation to rise to prominence, more emphasis by the government should be on the agricultural sector, as agricultural sector supplies produce to manufacturing sector. Hence, he advised the president to ensure he fulfill his promises on agricultural sector.

And that's it for today. Happy independence day Nigerians, happy independence day IBBULites.
